Etobicoke Bungalow Renovation & Interior Redesign – A Mid-Century Minimalism by BKDP

Mid-Century Minimalism is a complete redesign of a mid-century bungalow in Etobicoke.

In this redesign, we redistributed function throughout the ground level to create subtly partitioned open concept spaces. To suit our client’s minimalist stylistic preferences, decor was kept to a minimum and architectural gestures were used to create vignettes as you move through this home.

Overall colour palette is rather minimalist with warmth and texture emanates only from natural oiled walnut floors, subtle use of wood throughout and artwork. Contract is created with restraint use of black accents. Black accents are also used to delineate space to define rooms within an open concept flow.

The scope of this project included redesign of the ground level and basement spaces.

How do minimalist interiors remain warm and inviting?

BKDP layers natural textures like oiled walnut flooring, subtle stones, and soft lighting to prevent minimal spaces from feeling cold. Careful and restrained use of materials and design elements allows a livable space to retain a minimalist aesthetic. Curating experiences through sightlines and views, art, and furniture placement also heightens the tranquility often associated with minimalist spaces. For this project, thoughtful detailing and strategic contrast created a space that is both elegant and livable.

What architectural changes were made?

BKDP completely reimagined the layout and flow of this home, working primarily within the original footprint. New window openings were introduced to visually borrow from the surrounding landscape, while strategic door placements blurred the line between indoors and out. Carefully carved alcoves created layout opportunities that wouldn’t have otherwise existed. The result is a home defined by a series of considered moments—each one bespoke, layered, and deeply connected to the way the space is lived in.
